One of the things that I most enjoy in the SCA is seeing people be recognized and celebrated for their accomplishments. Watching elevations to the Peerage as a newcomer can be baffling, however, and I'm often curious about who these people are and what they've done. To that end, I plan to profile in the Chronicle any members of our Barony who are being elevated, with details from those who know them best.
For this first segment, I have asked Duchess Breyla La Viennette to share her impressions of Baroness Pesha of Little Egypt, who will be sitting in vigil this weekend to join the Order of the Laurel.
Pesha of Little Egypt is a Romani who lives in and around Europe, and anywhere else her family travels, from the late 16th Century (1550-1600). She currently resides in the Barony of Skraeling Althing. She has visited and lived in many different Kingdoms including Ansteorra and the East. Pesha has pursued many different interests within the Society.
Pesha enjoys Middle Eastern Dancing, often joining in where possible. She is also mundanely trained in theatre and takes advantage of doing so within the Society. She has a lovely voice and enjoys singing and voice heralding, well versed in helping in court or for tournaments. She can also be found by the list field, watching her husband, Sir Varakii Varenko Idanovich, when he is on the field.
Pesha is best known for her Romani research and her love in teaching this knowledge to others. Pesha has spent many years researching all she can about the Romani and emulating it in her persona. She also enjoys having discussions with others on these topics to compare similarities and differences.
Pesha is currently apprenticed to Duchess Adrielle Kerrec. Their Majesties have placed her on Vigil for the Order of the Laurel. When you are placed on Vigil, it is a time to reflect on what you have done in the realm of arts and science, a time to receive advice from others and decide whether to accept this honour or not. Once you decide to take the step forward to becoming a Laurel, you give back your belt of an apprentice and become a bestowed Peer.
Please join us in celebrating Her Excellency's achievements and her elevation to the Order of the Laurel this Saturday at Sockburner.
